A major procedure, like a crown or dental surgery, can take 12 months to get covered. Many smaller procedures, may still have 3 month waiting periods. Routine care, like checkups and cleanings, are usually covered right away. But even when the services are covered, an individual dental insurance plan seldom covers them at 100%. If a person needs major work, like a couple of crown, they will usually find themselves spending a few hundred dollars out of their own pocket.

I know that when my own son needed emergency work done because he had a couple of teeth broken in an accident, I needed to hand over almost $1,000 that morning to the dentist. He was standing in the dental office, with his broken, bloody teeth, but they were pretty adamant that if I did not have the money, they would simply pull the teeth and leave him with a gap. In order to have his two front teeth set with crowns, so he would have a pleasing smile, the money needed to be handed over.

The point is, you never know when you will absolutely NEED to cough up a fistful of cash, or credit, to get dental work done. And of course, in most cases, good dental care will keep a lot of problems at bay. It is also important to establish a relationship with a caring dental office so you know what to expect in an emergency.

Dental discount plans, like many dental insurance plans, have a network of all sorts of dental providers that you can find in your area. These dentists agree to offer plan discounts on services. Unlike many dental insurance policies, however, they usually include cosmetic dental and orthodontics in the plan. They offer routine dental care, like cleaning and checkups, for very reduced rates, and sometimes even for free. They may also be a good solution for senior citizens, who usually have very little dental care covered under Medicare, because they offer discounts on dentures and crowns.

The good thing about dental discount plans is that you can sign up and start using the plan right away! You will not have a waiting period, and many plans give you the option to print a card online, and to search for dentists in your area with a simple online screen. Some people, who have dental insurance, use a dental discount plan as a supplement for services that are not covered, or for services that are not covered very well, under their insurance. Other people, who just cannot afford dental insurance, find that a dental discount plan serves them very well. Since they are cheaper then dental insurance, and since dental insurance has waiting periods and deductibles and all, the discount plan ends up working out for them just as well!
